Lee Sharp and Clive Wijnhard were ruled out with groin strains and Mark Beeney stood in for Nigel Martyn who had a hamstring strain. Bruno Ribeiro was called upon to replace Harry Kewell after twenty-seven minutes and an own goal by Lucas Radebe had given the home side the lead at the Half-Time break. For the second half United made several changes with Gary Kelly making way for his nephew, Ian Harte, at Right Back, Alan Maybury, replaced Danny Granville at Left Back, Martin Hiden came on for Robert Molenaar at Centre Half and David Wetherall for Lucas Radebe at Left Half. It was two of the substitutes, Bruno Ribeiro and Ian Harte, that turned the game in United's favour. Ribeiro's precise free-kicks found the head of Ian Harte, in the fifty-fourth, sixty-eighth, seventieth and eighty-fifth minute and four goals ensued, with Derek Lilley also netting in the fifty-sixth minute as the opposition were torn to shreds.
